Google Messenger is the stock SMS/MMS handler in Android 5.0, but now you can be downloaded to other devices with SMS/MMS capabilities, provided they run Android 4.1 or higher.
Messenger comes with faster sharing, you can select or take pictures and videos directly from the app and share easily to your friends. You can even send audio messages to your contacts. It also has easy search feature which you can search through contacts and conversation threads to find exactly what you are looking for. More features are audio messages, emoji support, colored text threads, message archiving and more with new and fluid material design.
The app itself is a great improvement over the old SMS app and a huge one from hangout, if you're not a big fan of hangouts due to its inconsistencies you will like this one. It simply the best looking messaging app in the market and a refreshing change from the boring native Android messaging app. This does what a messenger app is supposed to with out all the added bulk, the right balance of features and simplicity. It sports a nice, clean, simple interface that is very easy to become accustom to. While the feature set might not be as extensive as other apps it definitely does what is supposed to do and does it well.
